| Among the earliest botanical prints are several engravings by Basilius Besler (Germany 1561-1629) issued in the « Hortus Eystettensis », one of the most magnificient and ambitious works ever published of ornamental flowering plants. These drawings evoke not only the beauty of flowers, their perfume and medicinal qualities, but are also an indicator of the perception of the natural world held by Europeans during the Renaissance.
The 18 th century, known as the Golden Age of Natural History, is primarily represented by 3 series of engravings : « Curtis' Botanical Magazine », which was first published in 1787 by William Curtis (1746-1799), « Medical Botany », illustrated by James Sowerby (1757-1822) the most famous English botanical artist of his time, and thirdly, Johann Weinmann's (1683-1741) « Phytanthoza Iconographia ». These prints, of a great aesthetic value, offer a window on the past, where one perceives not only their essential scientific intent but also an infatuation for horticulture. These works largely contributed to a more thorough reference of plants and their invaluable medicinal use. |
FLORA MUNDI
Galerie Mazarine is pleased to present an exhibition entirely dedicated to botanical prints from such varied origins as England, Germany, Japan and Canada, covering the last 400 years and ranging from the end of the 16 th to the late 20 th century. Jane Loudon (1807-1858), one of the greatest artists of floral depictions has represented in « The Ladies Flower Garden on Ornamental Annuals » the most decorative flowers of 19 th century gardens, whether they be cultivated in greenhouses or not. Her illustrations are well known as wonderful arrangements of multicoloured bouquets.
From Japan, one will find a magnificient selection of woodblock prints dating back to the early 20 th century, part of Robert O. Muller's renowed collection of 4,000 japanese prints.
The late 20 th century is captured by botanical acrylics on paper by Piet Leutsch (born 1932), a resident of Quebec for the last 20 years. His bold works of lively colours and rich contrasts convey a sensitive, yet controlled, spontaneity. . |

Tibetan singing bowls emit sounds when hit by a drumstick or when
rubbed on their rim with a stick. They originate in the pre-buddhist
animist chamanist Bön of the Himalaya culture from where they
get their name, Tibetan bowls. These singing bowls normally consist
of a alloy of seven metals representing seven planets of the Solar
System : gold (Sun), silver (Moon), mercury (Mercury), copper
(Venus), iron (Mars), pewter (Jupiter), lead (Saturn). They constitute
an excellet support for meditation or can simply be appreciated for
their musical quality. |
* Japanese woodcuts of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, from the Edo and Meiji eras. These engravings are the reflection of a perpetually evolving world, evoked through images of popular subjects such as landscapes, geishas, kabuki actors ; some of them were also inspired by legends or historical events. Keisai Eisen (1790-1848), Utagawa Kunisada (1786-1864), Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1797-1861), Utagawa Toyokuni (1769-1825) and Yoshitaki (1841-1899), are some of the artists featured in the exhibition. * Thangka, Tibetan scroll paintings that communicate contents of the teachings through narrative accounts ; they reveal a concise representation of the Buddhist conception of the world, describe the sacred past of the religious orders and their monasteries, and recall the most important masters.
